How to Paint a Room Like a Pro: Step-by-Step Guide

Painting a room is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to refresh your home. With the right preparation and a few simple techniques, you can achieve a smooth, professional finish without hiring a decorator.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

  • Paint and primer (if needed)
  • Rollers, roller covers and a paint tray
  • Angled brushes for cutting in
  • Painter’s tape
  • Drop cloths or dust sheets
  • Filler, a filling knife and sandpaper
  • A sponge, mild detergent and water
  • A step ladder

Step 1: Choose the Right Paint

Pick a finish suited to the room. Matte or flat finishes hide imperfections and suit living rooms and bedrooms. Eggshell or satin finishes are easier to clean and work well in hallways and children’s rooms. Bathrooms and kitchens benefit from moisture-resistant paints. Test sample patches on the wall and view them at different times of day before committing.

Step 2: Prepare the Room

Move furniture to the centre of the room or out completely, and cover it and the floor with dust sheets. Remove light switch covers, socket plates and wall hangings.

Step 3: Repair and Clean the Walls

Fill holes and cracks with filler, let it dry, then sand smooth. Wash walls with a mild detergent solution to remove dust and grease, then let them dry completely. Paint adheres much better to a clean surface.

Step 4: Tape Edges

Apply painter’s tape along skirting boards, window frames, door frames and ceilings if you are not painting them. Press the edges down firmly to prevent paint bleeding underneath.

Step 5: Prime if Needed

Use primer if you are painting over a dark colour, fresh plaster, stains or repaired patches. Primer helps the topcoat look even and can reduce the number of coats needed.

Step 6: Cut In Around Edges

Use an angled brush to paint a band a few centimetres wide along edges, corners and around fixtures. This is called cutting in and makes rolling much easier.

Step 7: Roll the Walls

Load the roller evenly, removing excess on the tray. Paint in large W or M shapes, then fill in without lifting the roller, working in sections from top to bottom. Keep a wet edge by overlapping each section with the previous one to avoid visible lines.

Step 8: Apply a Second Coat

Let the first coat dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then apply a second coat for a rich, even colour.

Step 9: Remove Tape and Clean Up

Remove tape while the final coat is still slightly wet, pulling slowly at an angle for clean lines. Wash brushes and rollers, replace fixtures once dry and put the room back together.

Pro Tips for a Better Finish

  • Paint ceilings first, then walls, then trim.
  • Stir paint thoroughly and mix cans together if using more than one.
  • Keep the room well ventilated.
  • Use good-quality brushes and rollers; they make a noticeable difference.
  • Avoid painting in very humid or cold conditions.

Final Thoughts

The secret to a professional paint job is preparation. Take time to clean, repair and tape, use good tools, and apply two even coats. Your freshly painted room will look clean, bright and beautifully finished.
